Nottoway Nation

The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia is a state-recognized tribe of Native Americans in Southampton County, Virginia. They were historically one of the larger tribes of Virginia, but by the late 19th century, their numbers had dwindled to only a few hundred.

The Nottoway are believed to be descended from the Powhatan Confederacy, which was a powerful alliance of Native American tribes in the Tidewater region of Virginia.

During the colonial period, the Nottoway were a powerful tribe and fought alongside the English against other Native American tribes, such as the Tuscarora, in the Tuscarora War of 1711-1713.

In the late 1700s, the Nottoway were forced to cede much of their land to Virginia, and by the mid-1800s, their population had declined drastically.

In the 20th century, the Nottoway Tribe worked to revive their culture and language. In 2010, the tribe was officially recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Today, the Nottoway are actively engaged in cultural preservation, language revitalization, and economic development.
