Ponca Nation
The Ponca tribe is a Native American tribe originally from the Great Plains region of the United States. They have lived in present-day Nebraska and South Dakota for hundreds of years.
In the late 1800s, the US government forcibly removed the Ponca from their ancestral lands and forced them to move to Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma. This forced relocation, known as the Ponca Trail of Tears, resulted in the deaths of many tribe members due to disease and harsh living conditions.
In the 20th century, some Ponca were able to return to Nebraska, and the tribe has since re-established its presence in the state. Today, the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is federally recognized, and the tribe operates various businesses and programs to support its members.
